Are Field(trial) GSP's hyper ? |
| There seems to be some folks that make
it a point to defame and criticize field trial bred GSPs. I think I've heard them
"ALL", from breeders of non-field GSPs... "Oh yea...those run off field
dogs, you can't even hunt over them" or "Oh you say your interested in a GSP ..
well I have puppies available and they are personal hunting dogs.. they won't run off like
those trial dogs" or "Sure... they(field GSPs) might be great in the field but
they are way too hyper to be in the house." or "Those field dogs just don't
relate to people... ours make better companions." In addition there seems to be
some "dogcism" with respect to the coloration of field bred dogs.
Non-Field breeders often attribute any white coloration in field dogs with English Pointer
crossing. Well, I now find it necessary to defend the greatest hunting companions I know of... field GSPs. What I find most intriguing about these false claims is that most of the folks making these statements have nerver owned a field GSP, never been to a field trial(or maybe they've been to one), never trained a field GSP, never hunted over a field GSP and generally have no clue what field GSPs are about. Certainly I cannot speak first hand about "ALL" field bred GSPs nor can I speak directly of the "other" breeders' dogs. But I CAN speak to what I know and have experience with. I own, raise, train, compete and hunt with field bred GSPs.. I will own none other. The majority of my dogs are of Moesgaard lines and more specifically Dixieland's Rusty and Brown-L. These dogs are the epitome of bird dogs.. they have great style, class, speed, endurance, intelligence, retrieving and scenting abilities. More importantly they are the BEST companions and house dogs anyone could hope for. As you can see from the photos my trial/hunting dogs live in the house as much as they live outdoors. When I travel to trials I will always have at least one GSP sleep on the bed with me(much warmer that way too). These dogs are extremely intelligent and there is NO reason why they shouldn't be excellent companions. I hunt over ALL my field dogs.. I will hunt over none less. All of the abilities and trainability that get evaluated in trials are the very same abilities that nearly EVERY hunter expects. When I hunt, my dog will remain steady to wing and shot, I find hunting, as well at trials to be a gentleman's sport and focus on the finest sensations. One such sensation is that impeccable bird work... no bumping, chasing or breaking on shot... the dog should be pleasant to watch work..and this for me is the greatest reward. Dogs first... birds bagged second... White... Where did that white coloration come from?? Hmmm.. perhaps GSP fanciers should look at the pedigree's to answer this question. A large majority of dogs get their white marking from dogs originally imported from from Denmark. For those that have not seen pictures of some of these dogs.. stroll on over to Blake Chance's site and have a looksee... For those that say otherwise.... I invite them to my world... where field GSPs are everything... including man's best friend. Well, my dialog is officially becoming long winded, so I will extinguish my editorial for now. Please enjoy the pictures and visit often as I will be attempting to write an editorial each month. Be Way Cool, --Steve |
